What is the role of DDA and how does it help my project?

It is really important that you familiarise yourself with the NHS code of practice in order to remain compliant and keep you in line with the guidance on confidential information.

DDA is empowered by, and operates as a sub-group of, the Architecture Board with devolved responsibility for:

  • Commissioning and approving the development of Architectural Principles, Policies, Strategies and Standards for Data which are clearly aligned to the desired business outcomes of NHS Digital and the Digital Delivery Board;
  • Collaborating with other Design Authority Boards to ensure a coherent and cohesive Enterprise Architecture, Architectural Principles, Policies, Strategies and Standards are maintained;
  • Collaborating with other external Data Strategy and Standards bodies to ensure that system-wide consistency is maintained;
  • Establishing a Data Architecture that is appropriate for system-wide adoption;
  • Providing strategic oversight for the design and maintenance of a national reference data architecture and associated architectural assets;
  • Providing leadership for the transformation and standardisation of data architecture;
  • Delivering semantic interoperability for direct care;
  • Acting as an escalation point for issues of Data and Information policies, strategies and standards.

What is the scope of DDA?

  • Programmes and initiatives overseen by the Digital Delivery Board;
  • Local Health and Care Record Exemplars (LHCREs);
  • Other programmes being delivered by NHS Digital;
  • As instructed, other programmes being delivered across national Health and Social Care bodies where the focus is on national capability or where there is a clear interface between national and local capabilities.
